Search Vs. Navigation

I looked at all four and of course did searches on my cats. On Bing - I typed in the cats name - Libris Jenny - and two pictures of her popped up. On Lexxe - I looked at cat info and found some erroneous info, but it was probably the person inputting the information.

I like the look of Lexxe when doing a search. It is easier to read then a Google or Yahoo search - it comes across as cleaner looking.

Mobile Web 2.0

The information on the mobile websites was really cool. Having information at your fingertips is the way to go. No more stopping to go through a phone book that in all likely hood has pages torn out.

Social Networking

Twitter could be used to advertise the new releases of dvds, books, cds. I did sign up for a twiiter account but need the time to go back and really learn more about. I do have friends that have Facebook and My Space accounts, but for the time being I think I will pass. To much info is given out and then you have all of the creeps out there lurking around.

Welcome To Learn 2.5

When I first heard about SL, I wasn't really sure about it. Now that I have some information, it sounds really interesting. Kathryn participated in a quilt show, I was thinking along the lines of participating in a Sl Cat Show.

Dark Side Of The Web - Internet Malware

The information was very informative and timely to me. I now have a computer at home and will be getting internet access shortly. It is very scary that someone out there lurking on the internet and get your info and take you to the cleaners.

Life Long Learning 2.0

The old saying goes that we are never to old to stop learning. And with the internet that is so true. You can sign up for classes on the internet and get a degree. We all know colleagues at OCLS that have taken this opportunity to get their degrees.

You also can learn fun things. I went to ehow and looked up pets. There is all kinds of new information that I can use with my hobby of showing cats.

OCLS and Library 2.0

Orlando Memory is important to the community and to myself. Years from now all of us will be able to go back and view what has taken place. There may be posts and pictures posted that you could not find else where. While browsing through Orlando Memories, I saw a picture posted for Gary's Duck Inn. I never ate there, but remember hearing about it and and it was neat to see a picture.

The Strategic Plan has one aspect about connecting the community to our services. By going out and doing outreach, I am able to let the community know what services their library has to offer. It is amazing the number of people that are not aware of the services we have to offer. One example would be the Books by Mail program.

Web 2.0 Continues

This by far has been my favorite. All kinds of very useful information. Farecast I will definitely use. I will use this to find cheap flights to go to cat shows. Upcoming was also interesting, this is a way to see upcoming events in your city.

I looked at Biblio.com. On this site you are able to search for out of print books and buy them. I checked on one of my favorite authors who has now passed on, Jack Olsen. Jack who wrote true crime and I was able to find quite a few of his that I would be able to buy.

I also looked at iFoods.tv Let's get cooking. On this site you are able to find recipes from around the world. I watched someone making an oyster recipe. Also on this site you can download a recipe and enter a contest.

Play Week

I went back to week 6 and took a second look at 'Library Spot'. There is all kinds of information on this site, so I went ahead and saved it to my favorites. You are able to find bestsellers lists (ex. USA Today). Oprah's books were also on this site. It is just a fountain of really neat information.

Chain, Chain, Change

I connect with the well connected community. The customers I work with in Talking Books benefit from this. They can come into the library and use the computers. But, you might think how can they use a computer if they can't see? With technology, there are progams that can be loaded on the computers, here we have JAWS. Instead of seeing the sceen they are read back what appears on the screen. Also, having Overdrive as downloadable media is another. The blind are able to download recent titles instead of having to wait for it to come out as a talking book.

Information Is Open Source

I found our topics interesting this week. Now that information is readilly available at our fingertips, I feel that we must be careful as to what to believe. One example, that I found, hits close to home.
I was browsing Flicr the other day and decided to see if there was anyting relating to OCLS. There were pictures posted of the library and someone had taken photos of the green boxes in Talking Books, labeling them "microfilm". This is one example of why we need to be carefull of what we read on the internet.

Health, Wellness & Technology

A lot of really good information. The Wii Workout looks like it would really be a blast. The Nutrition website will be very useful. I have signed up for that. I like the recipe analyzer. They had a lot of really good blog topics.

Sept. 2, 2008

My name is Pam and I like to read. That is a reallu good thing, especially if you work in a library and are surrounded by books. I will post my favorites. I also like cats and have been showing them for the past 20 years. Currently, my cat Libris Boo Radley is ranked 11th in the Southern United States.

Week 10

I plan on downloading podcasts from my favorite radio station. I also will be downloading music,
oldies from the 50's and 60's.

Week 9

All that copyright information sure is alot of information overload. However, it is there to protect the artists and the authors. I played around with Liveplasma and thought this would be a usefull tool for our customers. It is like Novelist or What Do I Read Next - only instead of being for books it lets you know what is out there in the field of music.

Week 8

This week we looked at Flickr. This site posts pictures. Of course, I just had to look at the cat pictures and browsed cat show judges where I was able to identify 23 judges I know from the cat fancy. I also looked at OCLS, it is really amazing what is out there on the web. Some people have set copyrights on their photos with what can and cannot be used so they may protect themselves and the rights to their works.

I am really enjoying Online Learning. I have been working with another person whom I am able to get help from. I find it beneficial to be able to talk with others and get their ideas on what we are doing.

With some help, I downloaded pictures to Flickr. We did five.

Week 7

Today we got to play and boy was it alot of fun. I made accounts on Catster and Puzzle Player.
On Catster, I posted a picture of my award winning cat - Libris Boo Radley - and made a profile for him. On Puzzle Player, I played a trivia game. Did not do very well. Oh well, next time. I also decided to try a cross word puzzle on this site. How cool is that, doing a crossword puzzle without a pen or pencil ( it makes correcting your mistakes a breeze). On the adventure I did not have to go far as my hobby is breeding and showing cats - Catster.

Week 6

Week 6 was very interesting. The lesson dealt with Social Networking and Mash-Ups.
Social Networking is where a user creates a profiles and shares it with others. For example: Shelari - I have created an account and a profile at that site, which others may read. This site deals with books and lets others know what other books are out there. The other element we looked at this week was: Mash-Ups. Mash-Ups are sites that blend together two elements. For example if you were looking to buy a car, you could go to MotorMap USA. The two elements on this site are the map and the information on the automobile. You type in the car info. vehicle make, model, the distance you want to go to find it and the zip code. It then shows you on the map where your vehicle is located. Two sites this week that I found to be fascinating were ELF and GuruLib. ELF - will keep tabs on the library material you check out from your local library. However, your library must be on this site to use it. OCLS is on there. The other site was Gurulib - this site will help people catalog their libraries at home. it will do books, dvds, music, cds, games and software. This sure beats the old fashioned way of going to a book and cataloging what you have at home.

Week 4

I found this week to be very interesting.
I have now discovered that there are all kinds of interesting websites out there. On Myspace.com I typed in OCLS and found the teen page and was able to view a clip of Otronicon.

I looked at 3 sites on Seomoz: 1. You Tube Travel, Yelp and Library Thing. I thought Library Thing was really an awesome site. I have signed up for this and have a page. I can showcase the books that I read. The site shows the cover of the books. This is a great way for others to maybe broaden their horizons and find books that they may like to read. I need to keep up with this and learn more about setting up the page. I have also gone to Shelfari which is similiar and done likewise on that website. These two websites are so much better than just looking at a bibliography or a plain old book review. One of the other sites I looked at was Yelp - which you can look up restaurant reviews. This would be an excellent place for people to go to, that travel.

Week 3 Of Learn 2.0

• I found this to be a very interesting exercise. I thought that the RSS feeds went to this blog - they don't. They are on bloglines. I did get frustrated even though I was on the right track. Got some help and finished adding my RSS feeds. I choose these 5: Blue Dot: Public; Big Cat Rescue; Fresh Approach Cooking; News; Technology At OCLS. I found that Grokker's is going to be a nifty way to search for material. I decided to look at American Shorthairs. In Grokker's the bigger the circle the more information there will be. My learning style is visual - reading and watching and I also like to participate. By doing a task over and over again it will finally stick with me.
